Henry’s Ordeal

Now I see them, now I don’t.

We went away for the weekend, from Friday morning to Sunday afternoon. Henry would stay out, he has a shelter in the garden. Our neighbour offered to feed Henry and keep an eye out for him.

Before we left, we checked three times and Henry was nowhere to be seen. He must be outside, we reckoned, as he is an outdoor cat. And we left.

When he arrived back home who was sitting just in front of our door and complaining mightily? He had no food during his time alone but he had had water in some glasses next to the sink. Meanwhile the neighbour’s cat had three wonderful days with double rations (which is why the neighbour didn’t worry, even if he didn’t see Henry, the food was disappearing).

But Henry behaved himself – the appartment was left in prestine condition (much better than last time when we left our son in charge).

At the moment he can’t decide if we need more scolding or if he needs more cuddling to make up for his misery.

spew, don’t drool

At night – just before he goes on his last prowl of the night – Henry likes to cuddle.  He snuggles down, often lying half on the keyboard, nestling his head in my or Lothar’s elbow.   No problem.  Until a few days ago. —

He came, he nestled, and ten minutes later my arm was dripping wet. Mhm… I changed my long slee- he caught ved blouse and fifteen minutes later it was Lothars turn to change his shirt.  We found it strange but thought little of it until we found his sleeping chushion completely soaked next morning (of course, a Sunday morning, what else?).  He was off his food and drank a lot and we kept watching.  I researched a bit and learned that he was too old to have teething troubles. I checked his mouth for foreign objects or an ulcer. Nothing.

He was okay the next morning and we were puzzled.

Until we saw him chasing, catching and chomping down on a golden-green beetle, a green rose chafer. I didn’t find any evidence that chafer beetles are poisonous but when he chews them, he  drools.

I keep forgetting that he is little more than a kitten and this is his first spring.  He still needs to learn a lot of things.

to the vet and back

Been to the vet.  Henry travels reasonably well, he complains but that is about it. Nothing like our Socks who peed every time we had to take her in the car – the first time taking us by surprise and we sold the car soon after.

But he is nervous about the whole procedure.  He sweats profusely on his paws (the only place he CAN sweat, as I’ve learned) and leaves little wet paw prints all over the vet’s table and once we are at home on the floor.

The actual injection was a cinch.  He looked right into my eyes when the vet put the needle in his flank and didn’t even flinch.

dingle dangle dingle dangle

Happiness is sitting at your desk and trying to do some work and a cat pretending to still be a baby cat laying down over your forearms, with his nose facing up and his paws sticking out playing with your dangling earrings. – It does nothing for productivity, though.

mighty hunter by day …

Henry has embraced spring and the warmer temperatures which bring out different life forms, hitherto unknown to him.  I am talking of bugs and black bumble bees.  He chases them, jumps high in the air,  does summersaults,  and basically navigates our garden (and living room) like a parkours environment.

woozy but fine

Henry has come through his op with flying colours (orange yellow and pink in this case).  I collected him a mere hour after the procedure, he slept (more or less) for another two, then proceeded to jump on the kitchen counter.  Lothar winced – but Henry obviously felt no discomfort as he jumped down again. And up again. And down again.  Up to now I only had girl cats so I was a bit surprised but quite happy about his speedy recovery.

the kindest snip

Henry is not impressed with us. We forgot to feed him today.

Actually, we didn’t. He is not having any food because he is going to the vet this afternoon to be neutered. – Yes, I know it’s the sensible thing to do. For catdom in general as well as for Henry’s personal well being. But still … *sigh*
